In collaboration with the Fiji High Commission – Canberra, Australia, and SYD Events, the evening gathered over 500 members of the Fijian diaspora to commemorate two significant moments in Fiji’s history.
This commemorative event celebrated the legacies of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, one of Fiji’s greatest statesmen, and the Girmitiyas, the indentured labourers from India whose strength, resilience, and contributions have laid the foundation of modern Fiji.
Ratu Sukuna Day is a tribute to a leader whose commitment to education, public service, and nation-building shaped Fiji’s early path to development. More than a remembrance, the celebration served as an opportunity to draw inspiration from Ratu Sukuna’s values of perseverance, dedication, and unity. Through stories, performances, and reflections, the event highlighted the ongoing contributions of the Girmitiyas to Fiji’s social, economic, and cultural fabric.
Speaking at the event, the High Commissioner of Fiji, H.E. Ajay Bhai Amrit, noted, “Ratu Sukuna paved the way for Fijians, encouraging education, unity, and service. His leadership vision led to the development of infrastructure and business growth that we all benefit from today. At the same time, Girmit Day reminds us of the sacrifices and resilience of the Girmitiyas, whose courage and hard work helped shape the very foundation of our nation. Together, these legacies form the heart of Fiji’s identity—a nation proud of its diversity, strength, and shared heritage.”
The evening showcased a vibrant array of traditional and contemporary cultural performances that highlighted Fiji’s rich heritage. Guests also enjoyed a Fijian Product Expo, which spotlighted the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit within the Fijian business community.
