Fiji and Australia have entered a new chapter in their bilateral relationship with the signing of the Ocean of Peace Alliance and the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union Treaty at the State House today (06:07:2026).
Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia Hon. Anthony Albanese and Fiji’s Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, signed the treaties before the President of the Republic of Fiji His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the bilateral partnership.
The Ocean of Peace Alliance, also known as the ‘Veitacini Treaty’ aims to recognise and affirm the commitment between the two countries to protect their sovereignty, secure their mutual defence and security interests, and contribute to the stability and security of the Pacific.
The key purpose of the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union is to embed and operationalise the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration as a cornerstone of both countries’ partnership, establish a Vuvale Union to enhance their collective security, stability and prosperity, and protect and promote each country’s sovereignty, democracy, and the solidary of the Pacific region.
President Ratu Naiqama said the signing marked a milestone in Fiji’s nation-building journey as it represented the country’s first-ever treaty arrangement.
He said the Vuvale Union and the Ocean of Peace Alliance were based on three principles which are partnership, integration and regionalism .
“The principles give special recognition to the sacrosanctity of Sovereignty while calibrating the integration of our systems,” he stated.
The Head of State said the Treaty builds on decades of friendship founded on mutual respect, shared values and partnership, with the two countries standing together through conflicts, peacekeeping missions, natural disasters and regional challenges.
“The Treaty signed today reflect these shared values of trust, of service, of leadership, and of our commitment to the Pacific. It is also a reminder that the strength of our relationship lies not only in what has been achieved, but in what we will build together.
“The words and meanings expressed in the pages of the Treaty and the Alliance realised the dreams of those before us, the belief of the current generation, and the hopes of those who will follow.”
President Lalabalavu also acknowledged Australia’s support across key sectors, including climate action, development cooperation, education, health, infrastructure, security and economic development, saying the partnership has strengthened the Pacific’s collective voice on regional and global issues.
“As we look to the future, there is much to be confident about. The challenges before us, whether climate change, regional stability, or economic resilience require precisely the kind of partnership that Fiji and Australia have nurtured and signed into history today.
“A partnership grounded in trust, integrity, in listening, and in acting together.”
President Lalabalavu commended officials from both governments for negotiating and delivering the agreements, saying they lay out a framework that is fit for the 21st century.
Also present to witness the signing were Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Penny Wong, Fiji’s Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, assistant ministers and representatives of the Australian Government.
