The Fiji Trade Commission to Australia and New Zealand was proud to participate in St Kilda Football Club’s AFL Cultural Heritage Series fixture against the Greater Western Sydney Giants at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, highlighting Fiji’s growing partnership with one of Australia’s most iconic sporting clubs. The match formed part of the AFL’s Cultural Heritage Series, a league-wide initiative celebrating the diverse cultures and communities that contribute to Australian football.
A key feature of the occasion was St Kilda’s special “Bula Guernsey”, worn by the Saints in recognition of the Club’s partnership with Fiji. The guernsey draws inspiration from traditional Fijian Masi art and storytelling, incorporating distinctive patterns that symbolise community, cultural connection, identity, and the natural beauty shared between Fiji and Australia.
The guernsey showcases two traditional Masi motifs: Ibe (Mat), representing Fiji’s natural environment and unique landscapes, and a community pattern, symbolising the strong and growing bond between St Kilda Football Club, the Fijian community, and the wider Australian community.
The Cultural Heritage Series provided an important platform to celebrate Fiji’s culture, tourism, and people before a national AFL audience and further strengthen the partnership established between Fiji and St Kilda Football Club.
The match also followed the Club’s recent AFLW pre-season camp in Fiji, which saw St Kilda’s women’s program travel to Fiji for training, cultural immersion, and community engagement activities. The camp provided players and staff with a unique opportunity to experience Fiji’s renowned hospitality, connect with local communities, and deepen the relationship between Fiji and the Saints. The initiative highlighted Fiji’s growing reputation as a destination for elite sporting teams seeking world-class training environments and authentic cultural experiences.
Fiji Trade Commissioner to Australia, Mr Daniel Stow, welcomed the continued growth of the partnership.
“Sport has an incredible ability to connect people, cultures and communities. The partnership between Fiji and St Kilda Football Club continues to create meaningful opportunities to showcase Fiji on one of Australia’s largest sporting stages while building stronger people-to-people links between our two countries.”
“The Bula Guernsey is a powerful representation of Fiji’s culture and identity, and we commend St Kilda Football Club for embracing and celebrating Fiji through this unique initiative.”
The Fiji Trade Commission acknowledges St Kilda Football Club, the AFL, Tourism Fiji, and all partners involved in delivering this important celebration of Fijian culture through Australian sport.
As Fiji continues to strengthen its engagement with major sporting organisations, partnerships such as that with St Kilda Football Club demonstrate the value of sport as a platform for tourism promotion, cultural exchange, trade, and investment engagement.
